If a PDF script pastes as short, broken lines, join the unwanted line endings before rehearsing. Keep deliberate paragraphs and pauses, compare the wording with the PDF, then paste the cleaned text into the reader. Free Teleprompter Online accepts plain text, not PDF uploads.
The short answer
- Join visual wraps; preserve meaningful paragraph breaks, genuine hyphens and numbers.
- Check the cleaned text in the reader and open its exported TXT before relying on it.
Start with selectable text, not a renamed PDF
Try selecting and copying one sentence in your PDF reader. If the result is readable, work a paragraph at a time. For two-column pages, compare the pasted sequence with each column before continuing. A sentence can be intact while appearing in the wrong place.
If you cannot select words, the page may be a scan. Ask for the editable source document or use OCR in a PDF application before cleaning the extracted text. Adobe describes OCR as converting text images into searchable, selectable text. Check its output against the page, especially names, numbers and punctuation. OCR is a separate step; Free Teleprompter Online does not perform it.
Copying can also be restricted by the document author. Check the PDF’s permissions or ask the sender for an editable copy. Adobe’s copying guide explains the distinction. Renaming a .pdf file to .txt does not convert its contents.
Keep the words, change the layout: a worked example
The fictional sample below represents text with unwanted page furniture and line endings. It was written for this guide, not extracted from a customer document. Compare the two versions before trying the same decisions on your own script.
CAMERA PRACTICE — page 2 Before re- cording, set the lamp beside the lens. Keep the check-in time at 9:30. Pause here. Then read the closing line without changing its meaning. 2
Before recording, set the lamp beside the lens. Keep the check-in time at 9:30. Pause here. Then read the closing line without changing its meaning.
“re-” followed by “cording” becomes “recording” because the source word was split by the layout. The genuine hyphen in “check-in” stays. The time remains 9:30. The page label and final page number go because they are not spoken content. Keep a number that belongs to the sentence, even if it happens to be at the bottom of a page.
The extra paragraph after “Pause here” is a rehearsal choice. A blank line makes the cue easier to find; it does not tell the app to stop. Pause playback yourself when you need silence.
Join unwanted wraps without flattening every pause
Keep the original PDF beside your working copy. At an unwanted line ending inside a sentence, delete the break and insert a space. Where a word was split, compare it with the original before removing the break and its layout hyphen. Do not remove every hyphen from the script.
Preserve a boundary that separates ideas, speaker labels or an intentional cue. Paste-as-plain-text removes rich formatting, but it can still carry newline characters. Changing the font or widening the reader cannot remove a stored newline either.
For a short script, selective edits are easier to audit than Replace All. On a long document, test any editor’s replacement operation on a copy of one paragraph first. Check that it joins words with spaces and leaves the paragraph boundaries you intended. A rule that preserves double newlines cannot recover paragraphs that the extraction never distinguished.
After cleaning, read across each page and column boundary. Compare the first and last sentence of every section, check repeated headers, and search for important names and figures. If words are missing or out of order, return to the source or request a better file. A line-break cleanup cannot reconstruct missing text reliably.
Check the cleaned text in the browser reader
Copy the cleaned script into the editor. Alternatively, save it as a UTF-8 .txt or .md file and choose Import text. Free Teleprompter Online accepts those text files up to 1 MiB; it does not import PDF or Word files directly. Markdown punctuation remains text, so remove any marks you do not want to read.
Start the teleprompter and check one paragraph while paused. Change text size or margins: the lines should wrap to the available width, while your deliberate blank lines remain. Then read it aloud. If a break interrupts a thought, return to the editor and change that break before adjusting speed.
Export a TXT copy of the finished script and open the downloaded file to check its wording. Our local browser check used the fictional cleaned sample above to compare editor text, reader text and the downloaded TXT. That checks preservation of this sample, not extraction from every PDF.
If the script accompanies slides, keep your slide cues separate from accidental PDF layout. The presentation cue-note example shows a readable place to return after an interruption. For a filmed demonstration, use the YouTube shot-plan example to separate spoken lines from actions.
Rehearse your cleaned script. Check the first page and a page-boundary sentence before committing to the full read.
