Teleprompter camera not working? Check browser access first

If your script scrolls but the camera will not open, start the reader, choose Record video → Enable camera, and read the status message. The next check depends on whether access was blocked, a camera or microphone was missing, or the device could not be opened.

Use the message to choose the next check

What the message describes What to check first
Camera or microphone access was not allowed The site's camera and microphone permissions
No matching camera or microphone was found Connected devices and the microphone option
Camera or microphone could not be opened Other apps or tabs using the device
A waiting-for-permission message An unanswered browser permission prompt

These are starting points. A blocked request can also involve operating-system settings or a managed computer policy, rather than the website setting alone.

If the button stays on Waiting for permission, check for a browser prompt and answer it. Leaving that prompt unanswered can leave the request waiting; it does not by itself mean the camera failed.

Restore access for this site in Chrome

In desktop Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings. Under Camera or Microphone, find the blocked site and change its permission to allow access. You can grant access to the site you intend to use without changing every site's access. Google's permission instructions.

Return to the teleprompter and try Enable camera again. If Chrome asks for operating-system permission, follow that prompt and restart the browser if requested. A work or school administrator may control these settings.

Keep a copy of your script before closing the page or restarting. Use Back to script, then Export .txt, to save a separate copy. The reader stores text locally when storage is available; the local-saving explanation covers what that does and does not preserve.

Check whether the microphone is the part that failed

The recorder can request camera and microphone together. A problem with either requested device can stop that combined request. If you only need a silent camera test, turn off the microphone option before enabling the camera again. The browser media API documentation explains how requests for required media fail when the requested media cannot be supplied.

A working silent preview narrows the problem; it does not confirm your audio is ready. Turn the camera off, switch the microphone option back on, then enable the camera again before recording a spoken video. Check the saved test clip for sound.

Close another camera session, then retry

If the recorder says it cannot open the device, close video calls, camera apps and other recording tabs, then try again. That message is a reason to check device access, not proof that one particular app caused the failure.

If a device was disconnected, reconnect it. Check the camera selected in your browser settings when more than one is available. For a front/rear camera change in this recorder, turn the camera off before selecting the other facing option and enabling it again.

Separate preview problems from recording support

Use the HTTPS version of Free Teleprompter Online. Browser camera access requires a secure context, and recording also depends on the browser's media support. A preview appearing does not establish that a usable recording file was saved.

When the preview works, record a short take, stop it and check playback before filming the whole script. Listen for sound and check the framing. Download the take in the format your browser offers. This recorder can produce MP4 or WebM depending on support; an MP4 option is not available in every browser.

Recording stops at 15 minutes or 200 MB. Download a take you want to keep before leaving. The recorder does not upload recordings or save them in browser local storage for a later session.

For a talking-head video, the YouTube filming guide covers camera placement and checking the recorded shot once access works.

Once the test plays correctly, return to the free teleprompter and rehearse your actual opening before the full take.
